 C3-Engineering Cables

C3-Engineering can provde a wide range of off the shelf and custom designed cables to meet the needs of a wide range of industries and environments.

The arduous conditions of underwater engineering projects necessitate specialist capabilities from specialist companies. C3-Engineering is such a company.

C3-Engineering designs and manufactures a range of cables suitable for use underwater and in harsh environments.

Our extensive knowledge of materials and applications engineering combine to manufacture high quality products, ideally suited for their environment. High grade materials such as polyurethane and polyethylene are used during manufacture to produce cables with superior abrasion resistance, flexibility and reliability.

Our range of Cables includes but is not limited to :

Aerostat Cables

Tethered Aerostats are unmanned non rigid lighter than air cehicles sometimes referred to as 'blimps'. These Aerostats remain anchored to the ground by a thether cable. This tether cable provides electrical power to the platforms systems, radar, infrared , CCTV, etc via fibre optics (fiber optics). The tether cable can also act as the main tensile rope, this involves the use of aramid fibres which act as the strength member enabling the cable to withstand snatch loads of several tonnes.

The cable construction uses Fibre Optics (Fiber Optics) and conductor cores and coaxials, these elements are wrapped in aramid bibres like kevlar (tm) or Twaron that acts as the strength member normally rated 4-5 times the safety margin with limited elongation of less than 3%. The entire package is extruded with a waterproof protective material such as polyurethane. The cable diameters are between 12-19mm diameter.

Diver Comms/Video Cables

With over 20 years experience our CS 382 Cable has become an industry standard with stranded inner coax core to assure good flexibility, Water Blocked Cable Interstices, Twisted Screened Pairs (TSP's) for Power, Pan & Tilt and Focus so that no Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) is seen on the video image.

In tropical waters where substantial Marine Growth is present we have added a Stainless Steel Wire Braid and an additional polyurethane Outer Sheath (CS 467) that protects the cable inner sheath thus providing the longest life possible in a very demanding environment where divers are continually pulling umbilical over growth and corals.

Our comms cable designs can have twisted screened pairs to avoid cross talk between pairs and our cable interstices are water blocked to help exclude water should the external sheath be nicked.

High quality polyurethane jacket material is used to assure UV stabilisation and a long life in the marine environment.

Aramid fibres are then braided over the cable bedding sheath to provide strain bearing capability if required. Again high quality polyurethane outer sheaths are extruded to finish the cable which is a material that is easily bonded to when adding your marsh marine 4 pin plug at the wet end.

Fibre Optic Cables

C3-Engineering offer a range of different fibre optic (fiber optic) options including single mode, multimode, tight buffered, loose tube, steel tube, plastic tube and ruggedized.

Loose Tube Fibre Optic (Fiber Optic) Optical fibre enclosed within a plastic tube with or without gel and aramid fibre suitable for both horizontal and vertical cable applications, each tube can accommodate several fibres.

Tight Buffered Fibre Optic (Fiber Optic) Similar to loose tube with aramid fibre which provides a high strength, crush resistant component suitable for long vertical spans.

Metal Tube Fibre Optic (Fiber Optic) Stainless tube encased fibres which can be hermitically sealed, less flexible than plastic tubes it however gives greater physical protection and higher working depth pressures can be obtained.

Ruggedized Applications The fibre optic is protected in an armour cable strength member, with an outer jacket of hytrel or polyurethane can be used for underwater sensors and sonars, video, telemetry, rov controls in shallow and deep water, aerial camera tethers, thiermistor cables, seismic, sowobuoys and range cables.

Main Lift Tether Cables

Many ROV systems are launched & recovered by a tether management system (TMS) Sometimes referred to as a “cage” or garage. The TMS offers a stable platform for the ROV to operate from, therefore the main lift cable supports the weight of the cage, the ROV, & ancillary equipment.

The main lift cable will provide the total services of the vehicle for power, high voltage, CCTV, signal, & communication via optical, coaxial or twisted & balanced pair conductors.

The strength / mechanical support can be provided by contra helical armour, or multilayer aramid braids. Weight, ruggedness, and physical protection are important considerations in the design & construction of these cables.

Range Cables

Acoustic or magnetic signature ranges utilize a number of sensors which are positioned or anchored on the seabed.

Range cables retain power, instrumentation & fibre optic (firer optic) data conductors, connecting the sensor to a shore langing & finally to a control or operation station.

This type of range is usually permanent or fixed in one location with many cables buried or attached to concrete stantions.

Transportable ranges are deployed from surface boats and require to light in weight and flexible for ease of manhandling and rapid deployment.

C3 Engineering can design & provide complete cable systems incorporating underwater mateable connectors. Many cable constructions can be use steel wire armour or aramid braiding which offer mechanical & tensile protection

Termination options including lanyard snatch release, fibre optics, & sub-sea junction box splitters can be custom designed for various local hazards or conditions. Anchoring weights bend restrictors, or launch & recovery pad eyes can also be supplied.

ROV Tether Cables

Tethers supply the vital link from the ROV to the surface or control module. Either directly or via the tether management system (TMS) through the main lift umbilical. The total services provided by the tether are power, CCTV, signal, & communications via optical, coaxial, or twisted pair conductors.

Mechanical strength is normally incorporated into the design using aramid fibres by multi layer braids or centre strength cords of aramid fibres.

ROV tethers are a strategic component in the supporting performance of the cubicle, so the design & construction has to address, crucial factors such as small diameter, flexibility, ruggedness, buoyancy, depth & handling requirements. These design criteria are important & familiar to Hydro Cable design engineers, whom can offer proof & qualification flex testing, pull testing, & pressure testing of tether cables, and professional end terminations with various connector types.
